Actin- Proteins that forms (with myosin) the contractile filaments of muscle cells.

Autotroph- Producer organism that produces complex organic compunds (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) from simple inorganic molecules by photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.

Bryophyte- Traditional name used to refer to all embryophytes that do not have true vascular tissue and called non vascular plants. Some have specialized tissues for transport of water. They do not contain lignin and are not
considered to be true vascular tissue.

Chlorophyta- Phylum that comprises the green algae that posses chlorophyll a and b, store food as starch, and cellulose cell walls.

Cuticle layer of a plant- Non cellular protective layer covering the outer cell layer of the green, aerial parts of land plants. It protects plants against dessication, UV radiation and various kinds of physical, chemical and biological agents. It also provides support.

Dicot plant with flower and leaf- A group of flowering plants whose seed typically has two embryonic leaves.

Ethylene- A flammable hydrocarbon gas of the alkene series, occuring in natural gas, coal gas and crude oil and given off by ripening fruit. It is used in chemical synthesis, especially in the manufacture of polyethylene.

Frond- The leaf or leaf like part of a plam, fern or similar plant.

Genetically modified organism- Organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.

Long day plant- A plant that flowers only after being exposed to light periods longer than a certain critical length, as in the summer.
DSCN2853.JPG
Modified leaf of a plant- adaptation of a plant to help it survive in its enviromental stress.

Phloem- Vascular tissue in plants that conducts sugars and other metabolic products downward from the leaves.

Pollen- A fine powdery substance, typically yellow, of mucroscopic gains discharged from the male part of a flower or the male cone, and then transported to the female ovule by the wind, insects or other animals.

Pollinator- An insect that carries pollen from one flower to another.
Bee.JPG
Short day plant- A plant that flowers only after being exposed to light periods shorter than a certain critical length, as in early spring or fall.

Sporophyte- Spore producing plant generation. The dominant gerneration in pteridophytes and higher plants and alternates with the gametophyte generation.

Stem (Herbaceous)- Plant structures that have been modified to serve the same function as leaves and occur in a number of different plant groups.
DSCN2849.JPG
Tendril of a plant- A slender threadlike appendage of a climbing plant, often growing in a spiral form, that stretches out and twines around any suitable support.

Thorn of a plant- A stiff, sharp pointed, straight or curved woody projection on the stem or other part of a plant.
DSCN2851.JPG
Xylem- Vascular tissue in plants that conducts water and dissolved nutrients upward from the root and also helps to form the woody element in the stem.
